Patients referred for epilepsy will have a comprehensive evaluation in our regional Epilepsy Program. This includes a history and physical and other testing as deemed appropriate including lab testing, an EEG (electroencephalogram), and imaging of the brain, such as an MRI scan. The determination is then made as to the most appropriate treatment for the patient for their seizure type.
If the patient does not respond to treatment with medication, our physicians work closely with epileptologists at the University of Iowa to determine if the patient is an appropriate surgical candidate. Our clinic offers Vagal Nerve Stimulation placement at Great River Medical Center for patients who are appropriate for this procedure along with local adjustments to the stimulator as needed in our office in West Burlington.
